“Just Before Spring,” or “Last Day of Winter.”
Today is the first day of spring. There are few signs, but it is certainly on the way.
I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and planning this week. Universities, as most know, have transitioned fully to online instruction to “flatten the curve” of COVID-19. Even though these are “troubled” times, I can’t help but notice a certain relief in the posture of my colleagues and students. Sure, there is disappointment and a little apprehension about this new way of doing things (for some), but there’s also a collective sigh, expelling loads of stress.
I am grateful.
I am not grateful for the virus. But I am grateful for the slowing down, for deliverance from the break-neck pace that had me feeling like life was spinning out of control and the only way to stop was to hit a metaphorical wall. I pray this wall is not as painful.
In the midst of the confusion, the questions, the planning, the poem below landed on my screen via a friend’s Facebook post. I felt every word. May the words carry you. May they lighten the heaviness of this load we’re all carrying. May they usher you into the magic and renewal of spring.
May you sing.
Lockdown by Fr. Richard Hendrick, March 2020
Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
they say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
you can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
the sky is no longer thick with fumes
but blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
people are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighborhood
so that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary.
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting.
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way.
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality.
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.
So we pray and we remember that:
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul.
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic.
the birds are singing again;
the sky is clearing;
spring is coming;
and we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
and though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
sing.
I hope you will not be offended by this. Music was God’s gift to us.
Music was an integral part of the Hebrews. King David use to play his harp.
Many of the Psalms were songs written by the Psalmist.
So, yes, go ahead and sing, sing, sing.
The refrain of a hymn says this “I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches over me.”

I love, love, love Psalms. And no offense at all. I agree. I wrote a poem when I was a teen about music–God’s first gift to humanity.

I know this song came out of a very different need but it’s been running through my head lately anyway and it does speak to these times as well, so allow me to pass it on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngFDy52eCZY

Yes!!! The group that’s singing in this rendition started at my alma mater–where I’m also employed! 😀 You should hear the Aeolians of Oakwood University sing it. Absolute perfection!

Wow. I had no idea. They’re wonderful. I ran through a couple of renditions, starting w/ Aretha Franklin’s, which is–I mean, the woman’s amazing, but she turns it into something diva-ish, which just felt wrong. This one speaks so directly to the heart. It’s beautiful.

Haha. I guess, you can’t take the diva out of a diva. And yes, Committed’s version is sweet. Here’s the Aeolians singing. I think I did a blog post on this song a couple of years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MzUZmUIimA&t=2s

I so agree! “Balm.” That’s exactly the word I used when I first read it.

I am seeing the same things where we are. There are a few stinkers, but for the most part people are being friendly, compassionate, generous, and helpful.

That is awesome. I hope people continue to be so. I also hope our country’s leaders would heed the counsel of the scientists and doctors. Let’s pray for that.
