Many Postage Stamps + Washi Tape = Happier Mail

When an envelope that looks like this (below) arrives in your mailbox, you almost forget there might be something even more interesting inside!

After studying the stamps for several minutes, I did finally open the envelope to find an elegant handmade card from my penfriend Beth. She and I had not corresponded in quite some time, so I was overjoyed to receive a newsy letter from her.

“This Is the Day,” Handmade Card by Beth

My scanner is being weird, and no matter what I do, I can’t capture the vibrant colors in the card.  “In real life,” the white is whiter, the pink is “pinker” and the gold is “golder,” shinier, and more glittery.

Beth made the card with card stock, washi tape, and a scripture stamp. If I remember correctly, she’s the reason I made my first washi tape card (so embarrassed by it now) and postcards many moons ago. I haven’t made a washi card in years!

Her card comes at a good time. I’ve been bored with my washi tape (and my Cricut), but you can guess what I’ll be up to this weekend…

Thanks for the happy mail and the weekend therapy, Beth!

Giddy for Planner Goodies

Teachers and professors love their students and their jobs, but our returning from winter “break” is rarely easy.  The “vacation” is less of a break and more of an opportunity to “catch up” and plan for the last half of the academic year somehow, along with the holiday preparations and festivities.  I wasn’t looking forward to Week 1. I needed more time. To think. To just be.

Amazingly, I got through the week and ended a lot stronger than I thought I would–ahead of the game for Week 2.

What made returning to work a little brighter?  A wonderful planner package from a friend/colleague, Cy. Just seeing this box stuffed with goodies made me giddy.

Planner Box Put Together by Cy

I didn’t go through the box carefully right away. I wanted to wait till I could take my time and appreciate the items one by one.  After a much-needed two-hour nap Friday afternoon, I emptied the box and all the goodies.

Interested in a closer look?

Paper for Planners

Cy had this paper cut for use in her planners. Because I liked it, she shared some (read: a lot) with me.  Some of the paper has now been punched for my 7-ring classic planner and my disc-bound planner.

Sticky Things!

Sticky Things!

One can never have enough sticky notes or washi tape for planning.  I don’t know where most of these came from, but I know the washi tape sample and the washi tape (story tape) roll came from PaperPlusCloth. Cy had the “Dream Big” post-its cut for use in planners. The tiny size works for me!

Christmas!

Christmas!

I’m ready for Christmas 2016 with these goodies! The package was originally intended as a Christmas gift, but the winter break was too short and too wet, so we could never find a time to get together.

Notecards!

“Girlfriends,” by Ty Wilson

These “Girlfriends” notecards were designed by Our Own Image, a company that is no longer doing business. I’m a little sad about that. I like their work and mission to create “products to celebrate life and family events.”  I’ll have to give a closer look at the notecard another time.

Planner Clips, Labels, and Elegant Notes

Planner Clips, Labels, and Elegant Notes

No planner is complete without planner clips, quick note sheets, and labels for quotes and motivational phrases.  The gold glittery planner clip was made by Cy. The yellow and gold planner clips were made by Bumble Bee Mom Designs.

Pouch

Pouch

I love having lots of cute pouches to keep the “little things” together, especially since I do some planning and a lot of postcard and letter writing away from home. It’s nice to have pretty pouches for the supplies I keep with me.

Pink and Purple!

Pink and Purple!

Let’s just say, “love!”

Foxy Foxes

Foxy Foxes

I’ve really been “digging” cute foxes lately, so I really appreciate Cy for including these in the box. They fit perfectly in my planners.

Foxes in My Planner!

Foxes in My Planner!

I forgot to include the mini fox clips in the “fox” photo, so I’m showing them to you with a peek at how I used the other fox items.  The bags make great planner pockets.  The planner charm pictured was also made by Cy. She gave me that for my birthday.  🙂

"Sweet Girl" by Cy

“Sweet Girl” by Cy

Cy has gotten into making washi tape “dolls” for her planner. I covet every one of them so far. She made a glamorous doll all decked in purple for me last semester (I still have to give her hair), but these are copies of another of her dolls that I l-o-v-e. I will be cutting these out and making bookmarks and embellishments with them. The copies do little justice to these little girls made with pen/marker,  washi tape, and torn natural papers.  They are A-dorable!

“The Complete Artist’s Way”

Last but far from least, Cy included a collection of Julia Cameron’s three Artist’s Way books in one-volume.  She had to stop me from buying The Artist’s Way several times, assuring me she had a copy in her storage she no longer needed.  I wasn’t expecting a brand new book still wrapped in plastic!  I suspect she never made it to her storage, but I’m looking forward to this journey!

I’m already having fun with every item in the box. I’ve punched the papers, list pads, and notes for my Arc and my DayTimer. You see (above) the foxes are having their own kind of fun.  I have too beautiful journals for my Artist’s Way journey.  I’m looking forward to playing more.

Journals!

Journals!

I’ve been a “planner” since the late ’90s, but somehow dropped the [good] habit after Hurricane Katrina.  I picked it back up last year because I was beginning to forget too many important things. Sticky notes and iCal were not working for me, so I’m happy to be reacquainted with organized planning.

I enjoy my planner and taking the time to plan out my weeks, months, and year.  I add stickers and washi tape and other embellishments because it gives me joy to flip through my planner and see all the pretty. I’m a “minimalist” when it comes to decorating my pages; I need as much space as I can to write everything down.

Just FYI (because I know this matters to planner girls)–I’m using my original leather DayTimer given to me [free] as part of a promotion the company was doing in the late 90’s.  The quality is simply way above par.

Thanks, Dr. Cy for the happy package of goodies and for making the first week back a bit brighter!

[Note: Sorry about the quality of the pics. Phone pics in dim lighting don’t always work–especially if you refuse to use the flash].

Letters!

Yesterday was “blah.”  I struggled through the day.  The sun fought bravely for a moment, so I opened my curtains to let the light in fully.  I normally work with only natural light in my office, so I figure having to turn the lights on contributed to my malaise.  The sun’s dominance was short-lived.

My mood suddenly turned bright when I arrived home to find four wonderful pieces of “real” mail waiting for me in the mailbox.  My heart jumped for joy!

First a postcard for “Superhero PC Swap #1” from “namelessgirl” (that’s her actual swap-bot name).

Action Comics No.419, December 1972 | Artists: Neal Adams and Murphy Anderson, DC Comics

Action Comics No. 419 |December 1972| Artists: Neal Adams and Murphy Anderson, DC Comics

She writes that she loves all things superhero and she just finished reading the book Super Gods by Grant Morrison.

My partner’s favorite superhero is Batman, so I sent her two postcards:

Detective Comics No. 587 |June 1988| Artist: Norm Breyfogle, DC Comics

Superhero Swap-1 Sent 01-23-15

Detective Comics No. 38 |April 1940| Artists: Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson, DC Comics

I also received lists of fairytales, myths, and folklore from Pynart, who hosted the swap “I Still Believe in 398.2,” the Dewey Decimal number for folk literature.  Swappers were supposed to send three lists–cherished fairytales, myths, and folklore.

I love the “Puss in Boots” envelope.  I’m still working on making my too-long lists manageable, and I plan to include one of the lesser known tales with the letter to my partner. Shhh…don’t tell.

I received not one, but two letters from Artybeth, one of my pen friends and a “Christian Friend” on swap-bot.

IMG_5457

This first one was for a Christian Friends swap, “Spiritual Goals 2015.”  We were to share our spiritual goals in a letter and place an encouraging scripture on the outside of the envelope. As usual, Artybeth enclosed extra goodies–more washi tape samples for me! I really like getting samples with swaps.  I usually  get samples of washi tape that I don’t have–there are so many great ones!  But what I really like is that they’re flat and fit anywhere, so they’re perfect for journaling and letter writing on the go!

IMG_5463

The second one was just because…Well, really, in response to a letter I’d written to her back in November.  Again, she enclosed cute extras.  I’m loving the vintage typewriter and Snoopy happy with a letter; this is probably what I looked like after leaving the mailbox.

Well, I’m off to respond to letters and start my list of individuals to write during “Month of Letters 2015”–a letter, notecard, postcard, happy mail into the world every day.

Wishing you a happy mail day…

My First Washi Tape Postcards

How did I unwind this evening?  I made not one, but two washi tape postcards!

Washi Tape Postcards-1

This (above) was the first one I made.  They are simple enough to make–washi tape and a sturdy backing.  I used The2Buds adhesive postcard backs.  I’ve been using them for years and they’ve not let me down.

Washi Tape Postcards

I haven’t decided yet whether this will be “all” there is to the postcards.  I’ve been experimenting with adding letters and images.  I will probably keep the pink and green one “as is.”  We’ll see about the red and black one…

What did you make today?

Hello Sunshine!

Look at what came in the mail! A washi tape card from TamiHope, a “Christian Friend” on swap-bot.  I like her style!

Washi Tape Card by TamiHope

The super-cool thing about the card is that it came on a dreary day minutes before rain poured down on me–my own special bit of sunshine.

Since my first washi tape card last week, I’ve been having a lot of fun adding washi tape to cards and envelopes.  I think I might try it with a letter or postcard this week–if I have time.  Have you made a washi tape card yet?

My First Washi Tape Card!

I’ve had a bunch of 12×12 washi paper sheets for some time, but I haven’t done much more than use them to cut a few shapes and robots with the Cricut. Beth, one of my swap-bot buddies uses washi tape for envelopes, postcards, letters and other mail-related items. I was really fascinated by her use of it on an envelope and a couple of postcards she sent to me, so I turned to Pinterest for inspiration. Some people have done amazing things with washi tape, but I wasn’t looking for amazing; I was looking for simple. Then, Beth posted a washi tape card swap. The image she posted with the swap made making a washi tape card look super easy, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

"With Gratitude," from "A StephMade Life."

“With Gratitude,” from “A StephMade Life.”

Steph, the card-maker, strategically placed colorful (uneven) strips of washi tape on card stock. She talks about the process on the blog post linked above the photo.

Here’s some of my process in pictures (forgive me for not taking pics earlier in the process):

Almost done...

Almost done…

I really didn’t have a plan. I just knew I didn’t want to go with horizontal or vertical lines. I thought I’d do just a few strips and leave an opening and some of the white border to embellish. I got a little carried away and ended up taping the entire card–with the exception of my middle.

Finished with the tape...

Finished with the tape…

This was simple. And the good thing about the card is that I didn’t have to cut any new sheets. I used remnants from Cricut cutouts. There’s always the random strip of material here and there that isn’t used by the machine–the space between cutouts, the border, etc.–so I’m so glad I didn’t toss those “shaped-out” sheets.

Should I fill the opening with green?

Should I fill the opening with green?

Should I fill the opening with red?

Should I fill the opening with red?

I even tried pink and thought about yellow and purple, but red won.

Trying out embellishments for the middle

Hmmm…An embellishment for the middle?

I thought I liked this one...

I thought I liked this one and decided AFTER I tacked it down that the red and green were too much.

I chose something a little more casual and a little less obvious with the color choice.

I chose something a little more casual and a little less obvious with the color choice.

I’m pleased. It’s bright and cheerful and just a little unpredictable and random. What do you think?
